HDFC Bank has no respect for India: NCDRC

In one of the major decisions rendered by the Apex Consumer Court while dealing with the case of negligence by HDFC bank authorities for non-activation of the Debit Card of the Indian Couple in time who was struck abroad in Singapore & Thailand with little money for 10 days has granted the compensation of Rs. 5,00,000/-  and also observed that HDFC Bank has no respect and love for the country as the India’s reputation was at stake in the foreign country.

The Indian Couple opened a joint account with the HDFC bank after depositing the huge amount of Rs. 1.5 lakh with the assurance given by manager that the debit card will be functional immediately and it will work in foreign countries. After the issuing of the debit card, the couple went to Bangkok and when the need of its use arise it was not functional. They immediately contacted the branch manager and asked him to resolve their problem. The manager informed that there is some issue about their date of birth and the same will be rectified and the card will be functional.

From Bangkok, the couple went to Singapore and  when they tried to use their card it was again non-functional. The couple underwent a lot of difficulties due to lack of money. After much harassment caused to them by the HDFC Bank they returned home.

The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission showing its anguish over the lackadaisical attitude of the HDFC Bank said that the bank has no love and respect for India. The Bank authorities were fully aware that the Indian Couple was strained in the foreign country with less money and  need of the debit card was immediate and it was the duty of the manager to resolve the situation immediately.  But the HDFC Bank did nothing and the country’s respect was being soiled because the lackadaisical attitude of the bank authorities.

The bench headed by Justice J.N. Malik said that it was the duty of the manager to resolve the issue immediately but he kept quiet for 10 days and thereby engaged with the serious mistake. It exposes the lethargic,  palpable negligence and lackadaisical attitude on the part of the bank.

Saurav Goyal, the consumer court lawyer, Chandigarh while appreciating the judgment said that the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has rightly enchanted the compensation from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 5,00,000/-  and NCDRC has rightly said that amount of Rs. 50,000/- awarded by the District Forum was just peanuts for harassment and mental agony caused to the couple and Rs 50,000  has been rightly ordered to be deducted from the manager’s salary.

Amrita Singh lawyer for consumer complaint after analyzing the judgment said that the Indian Couple suffered at foreign land because of the gross negligence on the part of the bank authorities. Such incidents tarnish the image of the country and many times it has been seen that foreigners also complain that due to procedural delays they do not want to have business relations with our country. The compensation awarded is just and proper.
